Frequently Asked Questions
What types of pets does Four Lakes Veterinary Clinic treat?
We are a small animal practice that cares for dogs and cats of every age, from new puppies and kittens to senior pets. Our veterinary services cover preventive care, diagnostics, dentistry, surgery, and end of life support.
What does it mean that you are a Fear Free practice?
We were the first Fear Free Certified practice in Wisconsin, and every member of our team is trained in Fear Free techniques. We use gentle handling, calm exam rooms, treats, and low-stress positioning to reduce fear, anxiety, and stress for your pet during every visit.
How often should my pet have a wellness exam?
Most adult dogs and cats need a wellness exam once a year. Senior pets and pets with ongoing health conditions often benefit from exams every six months so changes can be caught early.
What is the Free Vaccines for Life program?
After a one-time enrollment fee per pet, your dog or cat receives all core vaccines free for life as long as they return for a paid wellness exam within 30 days of their due date each year. Learn the details on our Free Vaccines for Life page.
Which vaccines does my pet need?
Core vaccines for dogs include rabies, DHPP, leptospirosis, and Bordetella. Core vaccines for cats include rabies and FVRCP. We tailor every vaccine plan to your pet’s age, health, and lifestyle so pets are never over-vaccinated.
Does my dog really need the Lyme vaccine in Wisconsin?
Ticks are common throughout Wisconsin, so nearly every dog is at some risk for Lyme disease. We recommend the Lyme vaccine along with year-round tick prevention for most dogs, and pets enrolled in Free Vaccines for Life receive a 50% discount on the Lyme vaccine.
When should my puppy or kitten have their first visit?
Puppies and kittens should see a veterinarian around 6 to 8 weeks of age. They will need booster vaccines every 3 to 4 weeks until about 16 to 20 weeks of age, along with parasite screening and a discussion about microchipping.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please complete the client information sheet and pre-visit questionnaire found on our New Clients page, and plan to arrive 15 minutes early. Bring any previous records or ask your prior veterinarian to email them to staff@fourlakesvet.com.
Do you offer curbside appointments?
Yes. When you arrive, call the clinic and our team will come out to you. You can choose a curbside visit or be escorted inside once your exam room is ready. Our Appointment Expectations page explains each option.
How do I refill my pet’s food or medication?
Call, text, email, or send a request through our pet portal, then pick up through our drive-through. You can also order from our online store and have products shipped to your home, or visit our in-clinic pharmacy.
Why does my healthy pet need bloodwork?
Baseline laboratory testing shows us how your pet’s organs are working while they are healthy. Comparing results over time helps us catch problems like kidney disease or diabetes before symptoms appear.
How often does my pet need a dental cleaning?
Many dogs and cats benefit from a professional dental cleaning about once a year. Your veterinarian will check your pet’s teeth at every wellness visit and recommend a cleaning when tartar or dental disease is present.
Can you help with my pet’s anxiety or behavior problems?
Yes. Our team can evaluate medical causes of behavior changes, and we also offer in-clinic behavior consultations with Dr. McClanahan for pets dealing with anxiety, aggression, phobias, and other behavior concerns.
Do you offer cat boarding?
Yes. We offer cat boarding in a calm, cat friendly setting where your cat is cared for by a trained veterinary team while you are away.
What should I do if my pet is sick?
Call us at (608) 819-6750 as soon as you notice vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, coughing, or a change in appetite or behavior. We offer sick pet visits and will work to see your pet as quickly as possible. Outside of business hours, contact your nearest emergency veterinary hospital.
What are your hours?
We are open Monday through Thursday from 7:30am to 6pm and Friday from 7:30am to 5:30pm. We are closed Saturday and Sunday, and we close from 12pm to 2pm on the second Friday of each month for staff development and collaboration.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Payment is due at the time of service. We accept credit cards, checks, and cash. Be sure to check our current promotions for rebates on parasite preventatives and other products.
How can I support my pet through the end of their life?
Our team offers compassionate end of life services, including quality of life discussions and gentle euthanasia. We will help you make informed decisions and honor the bond you share with your pet.
